Dad “Regrets” Missing Son's Talent Show, Blames CFP Scheduling
Life choices.
Choices, choices.
By Rich Taylor
LAKEWOOD, Ill. — Details have emerged from last week’s tense Daniels family Sunday supper. Sources tell End of the Bench that household patriarch Anthony Daniels expressed “regret” over missing his son Brady’s performance at Lakewood High School’s senior talent show on December 20th.
However, to the rest of the family's reported frustration, he refused to apologize, instead opting to blame and lambaste Lakewood administrators and “the entire clueless district school board” for scheduling the event opposite the opening game of the College Football Playoff.
“This whole mess is because they forced people to choose between another school thing and the historic friggin’ first game of the first-ever College Football Playoff,” Daniels said when reached for comment. “No wonder people want to defund the Department of Education.”
Brady placed first in the competition after performing Harry Chapin’s Cat's in the Cradle, a folk-rock song about a father who is too busy for his son, ultimately leading to a strained relationship.
Attendees described the performance as “haunting” and “gut-wrenching,” with one audience member saying, “After Brady’s song, I ran out to my car and drove 11 hours through the night just to hug my daddy and tell him that I love him.”

The Dec. 20 game that caused Anthony’s scheduling conflict proved to be a mismatch, with Notre Dame easily defeating Indiana University. [Editor’s note: Daniels has zero known affiliation with either institution.]
Daniels dismissed reports that his absence at the talent show has caused a serious family rift, claiming his son “totally gets it, even if he isn’t acting that way or talking to me since that night.” He also quickly pointed out that “Brady dedicated the song to me from the stage that night. Sounds like a pretty nice tribute to me.”
Reached for comment, Brady clarified, saying, “Oh my God! I didn’t dedicate the song to him. I directed it AT him, and then I think my exact words were, ‘This is for the empty seat next to my mother.’ Ugh. So typical.”
The younger Daniels's next step is to compete in tonight’s prestigious state regional senior talent competition, which coincides with the College Football National Championship.
End of the Bench will have more on this story after we miss a pivotal moment in our family’s story.
